Summary: This position is primarily responsible for planning and administering medically prescribed physical therapy treatment for patients suffering from neurological disabilities or diseases.
Conditions might include ALS, Alzheimer's disease, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain injury, Parkinson's disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Stroke, or Spinal Cord Injury.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Evaluates patients and interprets evaluation findings to determine the nature and extent of dysfunction. Establishes treatment goals and plans treatment to achieve established goals. Initiates discharge planning from physical therapy. Implements the treatment program through direct treatment of the patient, may delegate a portion of the treatment plan to appropriate supportive personnel, and coordination of the treatment plan with other health care personnel as appropriate. Provides advice and education to patient and family. Regularly assesses clinical signs and symptoms to determine effectiveness of treatment, progress of patient towards goals, and the need for modifying goals and treatment. Discharges patient from physical therapy when the patient has received maximum benefit from physical therapy. Provides accurate, timely documentation of physical therapy patient management. Demonstrates progress toward meeting the criteria for professional practice. Reviews Physician's referral (prescription) and patient's condition and medical records to determine physical therapy treatment required. Instructs, motivates, and assists patient to perform various physical activities and in use of assistant and supportive devices such as crutches, canes, and prostheses. Evaluates, fits, and adjusts prosthetic and orthotic devices and recommends modification to Orthotist. Confers with Physician and other practitioners to obtain additional patient information, suggest revisions in treatment program, and integrate physical therapy treatment with other aspects of patient's health care. Orients, instructs, and directs work activities of assistants, aides, and students Perform office activities normally expected including but not limited to filing, faxing, and emailing, and/or lifting and carrying office supplies. Plans and conducts lectures and training programs on physical therapy and related topics for medical staff, students, and community groups. Plans and develops physical therapy research programs and participates in conducting research. Participates in department or unit quality improvement activities Maintain and develop professional relations with referral sources; present at or assist with community service presentations at health-related symposiums and special events.
